The different types of dental composites

To better understand the function of each material, it is useful to place their use within the standard composite restoration protocol.

1. Shade selection (color matching)

Shade selection is performed before placing the rubber dam to avoid errors related to tooth dehydration.

2. Isolation

Placement of the rubber dam operative field. The use of magnification is strongly recommended to improve precision, mimicry, and the aesthetic quality of restorations.

3. Caries removal

After removal of carious tissue, the cavity is prepared to receive the most suitable restorative material depending on the clinical situation and the location of the affected tooth.

4. Matrix placement

Placement of an appropriate matrix system to recreate contact points, manage interproximal spaces, and ensure functional and harmonious anatomy, particularly in posterior restorations.

5. Tissue conditioning

The adhesive protocol plays a key role in the longevity of composite restorations. Etching gel is applied to enamel and dentin to create micro-retention that promotes adhesion of the material.

After rinsing and controlled drying, dental adhesive ensures the bond between the tooth structure and the composite resin. The quality of this step directly influences the sealing ability, strength, and longevity of the restoration.

6. Layering & creation of the dentin substitute

The layering phase consists of rebuilding the tooth using different types of dental composites depending on clinical indications.

Flowable composites, also known as flow composites, are often used as a first layer due to their low viscosity and excellent adaptation to cavity walls. They help reduce voids and improve material adaptation.

Packable composites in compules or syringes, hybrid and nano-hybrid composites are then used to rebuild tooth anatomy thanks to their mechanical properties, wear resistance, and aesthetics. Versatile, they are suitable for both anterior and posterior restorations.

In certain clinical situations, bulk-fill composites allow thicker increments to simplify and speed up the restorative procedure.

Injectable composites, meanwhile, can also be used for certain aesthetic restorations requiring fluidity and precise application.

These materials offer clinical advantages in terms of handling, aesthetic outcomes, and restoration durability.

7. Polishing

Polishing contributes to the final aesthetics of the restoration, patient comfort, and the durability of the dental composite. A smooth surface reduces plaque accumulation and improves long-term color stability.

8. Occlusal adjustment

Occlusal control ensures functional integration of the restoration and limits excessive forces that could affect composite strength or the lifespan of the treatment.
